I went to lollapalooza last weekend and am still thinking about it. And would like to bring along anyone I know... I had never been to a music festival before. And all I can say is WOW!! Music is sooo powerful. LOADS of fun. Of course, you have to get past people smoking in your face(which I actually started preferring to Sweaty ass and Feet), Body odor(This was me night one, but night two and three I smelled pretty good), be willing to suspend all personal space rights, the heat, the sun, starvation at some points, holding in your pee, lack of water(it's ok for me I'm lika a camel), and standing for pretty much three days straight.
But I was never unhappy about any of that because the music just takes over. The bands at Lollaplaooza were pretty kick ass. If you ever get a chance see these bands live do it:
1st day of festival:
Elvis Perkins in Dearland(saw them a bit), Poliphonic spree, moe, The Black Keys, Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals...(I love Ben harper, he puts soo much soul into his music...did a rendition of Master's of War with Eddie Vedder which blew me away....) something I noticed about Ben Harper in that song... the end verse which states "I hope that you die..and your death will come soon and the following the casket etc..." it seemed that Ben Harper had to work himself up for that particular verse. He played a good extra 40 seconds or so before starting it. It's a little past something I think he would ever write or put in his own music..but it was cool to see an artist work through his own personal comfortness to do it... I'm pretty sure that's what I saw there. But powerful music on night one... for sure...something interesting to add. Went out that night on the Blue line to have a few drinks and eat some food with my friend Magic. On our way back we were followed by a homeless gentleman named Aron... Aron had seen my friend perform a magic trick in which he changes small bills into larger bills. Aron had no Identification except for his parole information. It made me ponder the "Innocent Criminals" part to Ben Harper's band. I wondered how long this guy had been part of the criminal justice system and what he did to become part of it... maybe something horrible, maybe something minute like a drug offense... maybe nothing at all... And I thought how it affects the rest of his life on earth. What is crime? If someone commits a crime are they never an innocent person ever again? There's always alot of talk about dangerous people being let out on parole and I don't doubt that is a problem...But Aron didn't seem like on of those...Magic gave him twenty dollars and I gave him a two dollar CD I bought off another gentleman before we got to the train.
NEways Day 2= My favorite
Started off with
Started off with Silverchair who was new to me, but in reality ancient...the singer was an incredibly good performer... they were headline material for sure...Then we made our way over to the opposite end of the park to see the Roots who were possibly my favorite. They put out a very good vibe and their music sort of loosened up the whole crowd I felt. I found myslef dancing and singing more freely the rest of the festival... when the roots finished. headed over to hear Regina Spektor. I don't know.. I think its that she is very quirky, but move over scarlett johansen... Regina Spektor was amazing...I was surprised to see such a big crowd for her and she was too...she normally plays in small clubs I think..she looked up at the jumbo screen at one point commented on how big she was and at another point she stopped in the middle of her song because she saw someone sick in the crowd and made everyone part to make an aisle...She was incredible though if you've never heard her she has an interesting look at things and her voice is so unique...In her song Samson for example she tells a story about samson and another woman before delilah...Samson in this story lets his hair get cut and doesn't care if he can kill and destroy anything or not....it implies he's better off with a loving the woman and losing his strength...and that this story is not told.... Then we went on to see the Yeah Yeah Yeah's and followed them up with Muse...but we aren't sure how widespread they got...It was the second time I had seen muse. VERY powerful. They put on a great show...dooo dooo doo do do dooo...(crowd erupts)....Staaaaar liiiight!!! hahaha...fun.
Day Three....
Alll about Pearl Jam Pearl Jam Pearl Jam Pearl Jam....lol Got to the stage around 330 left drenched dripping in sweat around 1030... also got to see the Kings of Leon and My Morning jacket who were both very very good....The energy during the Pearl Jam show was unparralelled(Sp?) Pearl Jam fans have all these little things they do during the concert. I just went along with it basically not really knowing but I sort of got lost in the music...and when a minis mosh pit developed I went in and when people started shouting Oy I shouted oy... Tons of fun. Pretty much jumped and danced the entire show... .I don't know exactly howmany people filled the lawn but I couldn't see the end of the crowd when rising above it...The ending with keep on rocking in the free world sent me into a frenzy lol...
There's also something about being with so many other people who are just in a spot wanting to experience humanness. Just lots of love coming from everyone. Over 100 thousand people packed into Grant Park in Chicago. The positive energy flow from the people around you is incredible!!! Three days of it. I'm still on a high from it. Music Festivalss!!!!!!!!
